Bath & Body Works, LLC is an American retail chain specializing in soaps, lotions, fragrances, and candles. Established in 1990 in New Albany, Ohio, the company has grown to operate across six continents. By 1997, it had become the largest bath shop chain in the United States.
Bath & Body Works was launched in 1990 in New Albany, Ohio, as a beauty line for Express, Inc. The first store opened in September 1990 in a mall in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1991, the company faced a lawsuit from The Body Shop, leading to a rebranding of Bath & Body Works. The brand introduced a mascot named Kate, who symbolized the founding figure, with store layouts designed to resemble her country house. In 1997, the company introduced a secondary brand, Bath & Body Works at Home. Two years later, it expanded its product line by launching the White Barn Candle Company, focusing on scented candles.
Bath & Body Works launched a seasonal catalog and website in 2006, along with its first television commercial. As of January 28, 2006, the company reported net sales of $2.3 billion, second only to Victoria's Secret among L Brands companies.
In July 2008, Bath & Body Works announced the opening of six stores in Canada, following the acquisition of Canadian-based La Senza. The company viewed this as an opportunity to expand into the Canadian market, where The Body Shop was its main competitor.
Today, Bath & Body Works operates over 1,900 stores. In October 2010, it expanded outside North America, opening its first international stores in Kuwait through the franchise giant M. H. Alshaya Co.
